I put this together as a reference so I can use it when trimming my dog’s nails. I took my dog to the vet for a checkup and while I was there, I told them to trim the nails. Why is this important? This is important because many people just don’t know exactly how much to cut the dogs nails. Rule to keep in mind is that every single dog has a different nail size. Each dog’s nails have veins that are inside, and the veins get longer inside and smaller just depending on the circumstances.

Mimis Fresh Trimmed Nails

I use this video to watch and compare the nails to see how much I should trim. I normally trim the nails every 3 months, my dog is a pure Maltese, and weights about 10-11lbs. In this video It was the vet that trimmed the nails, when I trim, I trim just a bit longer than what the vet trimmed. This is because I want to make sure I don’t accidently cut a vein inside the nails.

Every Dog Nails Size is Different

If you plan on trimming your dog’s nails, I suggest taking it to the vet first. Have the vet trim it and have them explain to you where it would need to be trimmed if you were to trim it alone. This way you can know how short your dog’s nails are supposed to be, so you don’t accidently cut it too short. However, keep in mind the veins inside the nails get longer and smaller naturally. This is why I trim just a tiny bit longer than what the vet trimmed. Also, take photos of the nails so you might want to use it as a reference just in case if you might forget the length.

At one time my dog’s nails where so long, I trimmed big amounts. (don’t do this if you are unsure about the size)

Most importantly I want to mention that dog’s nails are actually supposed to be longer than what people expect. People compare big dogs to small dogs to medium sized dogs, but this is wrong when it comes to the nails. As I mentioned before, every dog’s nail size is different, and every breed is different too.

I use Grinders

Dog Nail Clipper and Dog Nail Grinder

Dog Nail Clipper and Dog Nail Grinder

To clarify that you don’t need to use Clippers when trimming the nails. I love using Dog Nail Grinder as it is easier and my dog loves it. Dog Nail Grinder makes it much more safer when it comes to the nails. If you haven’t tried this, I highly suggest it. However, keep in mind to use this very cautiously so you don’t end up grinding the paws or skin of the dog. Be very careful and use it safely.

Just Incase

There are rescue remedy to have handy just incase you cut too much and your dog bleeds. There is Styptic Powder you can purchase that is under $15 and you can get it from amazon.  This is why I try to avoid Scissor Trimmers and use the grinder because I can stop without causing further damage than the scissors would.

Safety Guard on Nail Clippers

There is a confusion between people and Safety Guard on the Clippers. The Safety Guard is not how short your suppose to cut the dog nails. It is designed so you don’t try to cut longer than the Safety Guard size. Many people might think their dogs nails are too long and they end up cutting a big chunk and end up bleeding their dog. The safety guard is so you dent cut bigger chunk than the safety guard size. It is to prevent accidental damages and this is why I find the Grinders much more safer.
