“Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.” – Mark Twain

(My Thoughts:)

What does this really mean, right? It is kind of like those brain twisting tails that you just start wondering and wondering and end nowhere with it. You just can’t exactly figure out what it means, unless you go inside the brain of Mark Twain and understand why he came up with this quote. Otherwise, it is just a guessing game that it can mean something different to each individual.

What it Means for Me

Specifically, for me this quote means that laughter is a key of life. You need to laugh more and keep laughing. However, at the same time when it says the assault of laughter it twists me to thinking maybe it’s the opposite. Maybe we are not meant to laugh as it is childish and not mature. However, laughter is a medicine of its own as it feels good when you laugh.

As thinking about it many times, I’ve now come to my conclusion about this quote. I think it means that laughing is disrespectful and not something we should do. When I’m walking around, and I see people laughing I tend to think that they are being childish and it’s not really great way to look.

Realistically, now I think that Mark Twain is referring to shame. As if, if you laugh at someone you are just being in shame for laughing. Also, laughing will have its own punishment as you laugh now and cry later. There is always a catch to something especially if you are laughing at someone.

It’s kind of interesting to understand that during the era of Mark Twain Presidency that they thought like this. That life kept going on just as it’s goin on right now. Due to the lack of social media, it feels like people didn’t have much an open mind. But, social media really had nothing to do with it and instead of social media it was the news.
